Gurit (Asia Pacific) Ltd Position: Composite Structural Design Engineer Reports to: Engineering Manager – APAC Location: Albany, Auckland, New Zealand AIM To provide high quality composite engineering and laminate specifications and processing advice to internal and external customers within the APAC region OVERVIEW This role is a member of a specialised structural engineering team focused on providing high quality composite engineering and processing advice to internal and external customers. Based in New Zealand, the candidate will be a part of a small, busy and dynamic team that services external customers from the West Coast of the US, through Asia Pacific, and on to India. The role should therefore promote Gurit and its products/services in a manner consistent with the culture and values of the company. The role is also to be proactive in assisting with improving the effectiveness and proficiency of the engineering division. KEY TASKS
- Analyse structures, specify and document composite laminates to meet the needs of customers.
- Write high quality reports containing specifications, weight and cost estimates, comparisons and sketches.
- Work effectively with the design draughtspeople when appropriate.
- Provide on-site assistance to customers so they achieve effective and reliable processing techniques
- Design and undertake mechanical test programs, understanding the outcomes required, and utilizing knowledge and facilities with Gurit to design and implement a programme to achieve them within the agreed timeframe.
- Assist the materials sales, warehouse and manufacturing staff by providing clear work instructions for the preparation of samples, or for procedures to be followed to address the defined problems or required outcomes
- Be proactive in identifying areas where training is required for the role
- Recommend new/refined in-house design procedures, developing and implementing them where required
- Document standard procedures.
- Assist with research into new composite technology solutions through testing, then evaluating and documenting the results.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor (or higher) degree in Engineering, specialising in Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Composite Materials or Naval Architecture
- Good general computer literacy (MS Word)
- High level analytical computer literacy (Excel, Multiframe etc)
- Working knowledge of the analysis of marine structures
- Working knowledge of the analysis of composite structures
- Knowledge of boatbuilding practicalities, esp. in fibre reinforced composites
- Experience in boat design, detailing, construction and operation
- Medium level 2D AutoCAD skills
- Finite element analysis experience preferred
